What should I do if I can not pay my rent?

If you can not pay your rent for whatever reasons you should contact your housing officer straight away. We will treat your case privately and fairly. Let us know of any difficulties quickly and we can often help you. If you delay contacting us or fail to pay your rent, you would build up rent arrears and you could be at risk of losing your home.

The earlier you contact us the easier it is for us to help you. We may help by:

  • Allowing you to clear the amount you owe in instalments.
  • Suggesting how to increase your income (for example by claiming welfare benefits).
  • Suggesting how you can manage your debts.
  • Advising you where you can get independent advice.
  • Arranging for direct payments to be made from the benefits you receive.

Avoid these potential pitfalls, and there should not be a problem. Our aim is for you to stay in your home and help you find ways to pay your rent. If you are having problems paying your rent please speak to your Housing Officer straight away who would be able to refer you to Merton Debt and Welfare Benefits Advice for additional help.
