If you only require a minor adaptation, for example a hand rail to be fitted or a small access ramp provided, we may be able to undertake that work directly – please contact our repairs team, by calling 01306 505555 selection option 1 or by email repairs@mvha.org.uk.
For more significant adaptations, before we undertake or agree to major works, we must have an Occupational Therapist’s detailed assessment to justify the need – we will submit an application for an OT assessment if requested to do so.
In order for works to be undertaken most residents will require a Disabled Facilities Grant (DFG) to pay for the works, we will help with the application for that grant. If a DFG is insufficient to cover the full costs of undertaking the necessary work, we will assist in seeking additional funding.
Occasionally, we may ask that where a property is under-occupied ( for example 1 person or a couple living in a three bed room property) or inappropriate for the suggested adaptation, a resident considers moving to a different, more appropriate, property as part of the provision of the adaptation.
If, for any reason, a resident does not qualify for DFG funding, we will be happy to consider the adaptation but this will be under our Improvements Policy. Residents may, in accordance with their tenancy agreement request consent to carry out Adaptation work at their own cost. Residents should seek permission from MVHA before carrying out any works. For more information please see the
Property Alterations and Improvements policy (97 KB). We strongly recommend that under no circumstances does a resident undertake, or commission, any works without reference to this policy.
If we have current plans to modify a property as part of our scheduled maintenance or Decent Homes programme, we will be happy to consider helping with the funding of the improvement, subject to a maximum level consistent with our planned expenditure for the works.
