What is Equality and Diversity?

Equality is about ensuring that wherever possible, individuals or groups of people have fair access to the same opportunities.
Diversity is respecting that individuals and groups have differences and in order to provide equal opportunities, services and processes may need to differ to ensure that we are not discriminating.
Legislation dictates that we should pay particular attention to the needs of individuals and groups that have the following protected characteristics as these have been identified as often being subject to discrimination:

Marriage and civil partnership;
Pregnancy and maternity;
Race;
Religion or belief;
Sex;
Sexual orientation;

Why do we need this information?

Our aim is to provide fair and accessible services to all residents. The information we collate enables us to plan our services and facilities for the future to make adjustments if certain groups or individuals have any particular needs. The answers you give will ensure that we use the most suitable way of communicating with you. We would like to collect as much information as we can in order to achieve this, but if you would rather not answer any of the questions you do not have to. In many cases there is a ‘prefer not to say’ option.
